Make a wall-size poster with the printer you already own

A block poster, tiled poster, or multi-page poster is one large image divided across ordinary sheets of paper. Instead of sending artwork to a large-format print shop, you print a numbered PDF on an A4, Letter, A3, Legal, Tabloid, B4, or B5 printer, trim selected edges, overlap the sheets, and assemble them into one continuous picture. GridMaker calculates the physical geometry before it draws a pixel, so page margins, overlap, orientation, and finished dimensions agree with the downloadable file.

The tool starts with the practical decision that matters most: choose a page grid when you know how many sheets you can use, or choose Exact size when the final poster must fit a wall, foam board, classroom display, prop, pattern, or presentation panel. Processing happens locally in the browser. The source image does not need an account, cloud upload, or server conversion queue.

True finished dimensions

Exact size preserves the requested width and height, including a partially used last row or column. It does not silently replace 60 × 90 cm with the nearest full-sheet rectangle. That distinction matters when the assembled poster must fit a measured surface.

Assembly-aware pages

Red crop marks, row-column labels, and blue overlap guides can be switched independently. A first-page assembly map helps prevent rotated, swapped, or misaligned sheets.

Paper sizes available in the PDF generator

Select the sheet that matches the printer tray, then choose portrait or landscape. Margins are subtracted on all four sides before the page grid is calculated. Custom paper accepts either edge from 100 to 500 mm and is useful for photo paper, plotter offcuts, craft media, and unusual printer drivers.

Complete poster planning paper-size reference

These standard dimensions help translate a desired poster into available sheets. A0, A1, A2, and B0–B3 may be larger than a home printer can feed, but they are useful finished-poster targets. Enter their dimensions in Exact size and GridMaker determines how many smaller printable pages are required.

ISO A series

The A series keeps the same 1:√2 proportion when folded or cut in half. A4 is the common office sheet; A3 is two A4 sheets; A2, A1, and A0 are useful poster targets.

Pages mode vs Exact size

Choose the sizing method from the real constraint

Pages mode is best when paper consumption is fixed. Set the width in sheets, leave height on Auto to preserve the cropped image proportion, or choose a row count. Fit keeps the complete crop and may leave blank bands. Fill covers the finished rectangle and may remove content at the outer edges.

Exact size is best when the wall or mounting board is fixed. Enter centimeters or inches and the calculator finds the grid. A final row or column may use only part of its printable area because preserving the requested dimension matters more than consuming every sheet completely.

Margins and overlap

Separate printer safety from assembly allowance

Margin is the unprinted border between the paper edge and poster. Use at least the printer’s non-printable minimum; 10 mm is a reliable starting point. A larger margin can increase page count but gives tape and handling more room.

Overlap is repeated image area shared with the page above or left. Zero uses less paper but requires edge-to-edge alignment. Five to ten millimeters is easier to register. Blue guides mark the repeated strip and can be switched off independently; red marks identify the cut. Test one pair before trimming everything.

DPI and source quality

Choose resolution for viewing distance, not marketing numbers

Draft 72 DPI renders quickly for layout checks. Standard 150 DPI balances quality and file size for wall viewing. High 300 DPI helps with close viewing, text, line art, and small sheets, but cannot restore missing source detail. Source quality compares cropped pixels with physical placement.

If source DPI is low, reduce the finished size, choose Fit so fewer pixels are cropped, or use a larger original. A 300 DPI setting cannot invent texture in a compressed screenshot. For large posters, readable composition often matters more than arm’s-length pixel detail.

Printing and assembly

Keep the PDF scale stable from browser to wall

Print the calibration PDF at Actual size or 100% and measure both rulers. Correct the printer before using expensive paper. Disable Fit to page, Shrink, borderless enlargement, and driver scaling. Confirm paper and orientation match the PDF.

Use row-column labels when enabled; otherwise match sheets to the overview and neighboring image content. Trim overlap edges and dry-fit the center before adding adhesive. Removable tape suits temporary displays; spray mount gives a flatter permanent result. Secure outward from the center to limit accumulated error.

Before using tape or glue

  • Print the calibration ruler once for any unfamiliar printer or driver.
  • Confirm paper size, orientation, and Actual size / 100% in the print dialog.
  • Compare the first two neighboring pages before trimming the full stack.
  • If page labels are enabled, keep them until the dry layout is complete.
  • Trim consistent sides: commonly the right and bottom edges of each sheet.
  • Use overlap guides to align image detail, not the physical paper corners.
  • Assemble from the center outward and recheck long straight lines often.
  • Use archival adhesive when the print must remain flat for a long time.

What is a block poster?+

A block poster is one large image printed on a grid of smaller sheets, then trimmed, overlapped, and joined. It is also called a tiled, multi-page, raster, or printer-paper wall poster.

Does Exact size really keep my requested dimensions?+

Yes. The entered width and height define the finished boundary. A final row or column may contain unused white paper instead of rounding the poster up to a complete sheet.

Should I choose Fit or Fill?+

Fit keeps the complete crop and may add blank bands when proportions differ. Fill covers the entire poster and may remove image content at the outer edges.

How much overlap should a tiled poster use?+

Five to ten millimeters works for most home printing. Use more when alignment is difficult. Use zero only for accurate borderless output or carefully trimmed edge-to-edge joins.

Which DPI is best for a wall poster?+

Standard 150 DPI suits many posters at normal wall distance. Use 72 for a proof and 300 for close-viewed detail, small text, or line art. Higher DPI increases time and file size.

Are my images uploaded?+

No. The browser reads the file, draws previews, renders sheets, and creates the PDF locally. Normal analytics may record a page visit without receiving the source image.

Why does my printed poster measure incorrectly?+

The print dialog probably scaled it. Select Actual size or 100%, disable Fit and Shrink, verify the paper, and print the calibration page. Some drivers add borderless enlargement.

Can I use A0, A1, A2, or B-series poster dimensions?+

Yes. Enter a reference-table size in Exact mode and print it on supported smaller sheets. B4 and B5 are direct outputs; larger A and B sizes work as finished targets.
